RARE PLANT SURVEY on THAILAND'S Tiger’s Nose - Ep 137

- Опубликовано: 2 авг 2024
- During my trip to Thailand, I joined botanist Dr. Piyakaset on a botanical survey to the top of the Tiger's Nose in Thailand. Along that journey we came face-to-face with beautiful, rare flora; epic views; and unexpected news. Do yourself a favor and watch the film to the very end.
***
This episode is dedicated to botanist we lost that day: Chanin Thorut. Chanin started his love of plants in early childhood-and later become a pioneer in several plant groups, including Hoya, Bromeliaceae, orchids, and cacti and succulents. During his professional career, he imported many foreign species for propagation, along with writing articles about them in leading house or gardening magazines in Thailand.
Chanin also explored many remote forests and discovered several rare, undescribed species, including a brand new Bulbophyllum from Khao Luang National Park in Nakornsri Thammarat Province, and later named it after Dr. Tem Smitinand as Bulbophyllum smitinandii Seidenf. & Thorut 1996.
In term of Bromeliads, Chanin is well known and a leading authorities in Hybridizing Dyckia. He imported the first batch from many different places and creating new hybrids in his backyard. Some of his well known hybrids are Dyckia 'Charlot', Dyckia 'Pharaoh', Dyckia 'Cleopatra', and also named several sports from other's seedlings or offsets that look very special; for example D. 'Diamond Crown', D. 'Yakuza' , and D. 'Tsunami'.
Chainin joined us on our trip but didn't come up the mountain, as he wasn't feeling well. He was later rushed to the hospital in Chiang Mai during the hike and passed away hours later at the hospital from heart failure on October 29. Chanin always shared his collection and thoughts to beginners.
He co-authored the ‘Succulent’ Book with Pijaya Vachajitpan and Pavaphon Supanantananont. It was later translated into Japanese.

This episode has just been nominated for a WEBBY AWARDS in the Travel Category for 2020. We are up against big media like Nat Geo, BBC, and others. It would mean so much to me if you voted for it: bit.ly/2W4jOWa
Summer Rayne Oakes Voted Summer 😎 As of now, Homestead is in 1st place 🙌💚
I did. Although I’m only deeper interested in plants since I have corona free time, I would have voted for it anyways.
It’s always great when a small team with passion do their thing and do it good.
Greetings from Germany 🙋🏼♀️
(This plant thing will grow. If I had money, I would invest in it.
Because of the recent developments people will concentrate more in make their home nice instead of travelling around the globe.)
Congratulations! Being nominated really means a lot❤️🇵🇭
Amazing
CONGRATULATIONS ON THE WIN FOR PEOPLE'S VOICE!! 👍🏻 Sorry for the loss of your friend.
This is one of most emotional 'Plant One On Me' videos that we filmed. I ask that you watch to the very end. Thank you.
That was so shocking:-(
this is really a beautiful journey to the mountain with all those plants and bugs, but my god what a turn of events, bless you all. so sorry for your lost and may Khun Chanin rest in peace and nature
I am so sorry for everyones lost. I am so sad.
Condolences to you and the family and friends of your botanist friend.
Was enjoying your reactions to all of the insects and rare plants thinking, Wow, Summer is really in her element. Then came to the end. So sad.
I wonder how many scientific names of plants are stored in Dr. Piyakaset's brain. I love the look of joy in his face when introducing or naming those rare flora. Like you, he's amazing.
One of my earliest dreams was to become a botanist. I feel like reliving my dream. lol Kidding aside, thank you for sharing your journey with us. The feeling must be wondrous.
PS: Thanks for the lovely message, dear Summer. This is why I love the cherry blossoms so much. They remind me of life's beauty yet ephemeral nature, to live life to the full. RIP, Dr. Torut.
I'm so pleased you enjoyed the film-and in some small way, you are reliving some of your earliest dreams. Thank you as well for your condolences.
As a Thai, it’s worth sharing this coincident where his name is literally ‘love of nature’. Piya is beloved or love and Kaset is agriculture/nature. Its like he was born for this.
Wow unbelievable, thanks for sharing this.
may Chanin be in a beautiful garden of his favorite plants, and may his family find peace with his passing.
Thank you for that beautiful sentiment.
Oh my god the end of this broke my heart. That is so incredibly sad. I almost lost my dad to a heart attack two years ago and we think that’s what happened to my brother (he overdosed in April) as well. It has completely and entirely changed me as a person. So much rides on that one little organ. The gravity of how fragile life is and how brief a time we have here knocked me into another universe. My deepest sympathies to his loved ones, and to you Summer.
That said, I hope I get to spend my last day doing what I love, and with passionate people, like Chanin did.
Rest in power. 💚
We captured Chanin in the last moments of his life-doing what he loved, so I am pleased that we'll be able to share his energy and enthusiasm to the world....Next episode....
Such a sad ending. Sending prayers for his family and friends.
Thank you for watching and sharing your sentiments. We are going to get this video subtitled in Thai for his family and friends.
The Dr. Is cute
😅😅
Seems like I'm not the only one have that thought
Oh my god, I'm literally in tears- you did such a beautiful take in those final moments, the emotion was absolutely pouring out of the screen and it's truly heart breaking to lose such a fantastic botanist.
Either way, thank you summer, for bringing him and all the work being down in the botanical gardens abroad to us. I am extremely thankful to be able to see it and experience it second hand
Thank you Aran for your sentiments and for watching the film. It's a special one to all of us.
This is quite a rare opportunity for even Thai people to learn such a good thing. Thank for your effort on this episode.
This channel deserves more subscribers. It’s like watching National Geographic and BBC ❤️
Kudos to you Summer and your team. Very inspiring. This video is one of my favorites. Love lots from the Philippines 💚🪴💚
I am sitting here in lock down in London on the 19th April 2020 and thanking the lord for the blessing of life and Summer for transporting me to such a magical place. Thank you. Christine.
Two passionate people talking about plants. That shot on the cliff was intense. I especially enjoyed the conversation at the picnic. :). So sorry for your loss:(
RIP Chanin. Dr. Piyakaset is such an amazing botanist. He is like plant encyclopedia. It is such a wonderful video. Thanks for sharing, Summer. Keep up the good work.
I've been looking for this type of contents with plants and the wild, it open your mind to what is out there specially the dedication of people in this type of living.. I hope many plant lovers will discover this channel! Love you guys💕
I actually cried at the end, thanks to you for taking the opportunity to film Chanin so we can immortalize, share his personnality, his passion and his huge talent. Sorry for your loss. xoxo
Summer, the beauty of your video and the passion of you guys for plants and insects and our planet, and the same time the sorrow for loss of one of the botanist, bring tears from so many different kind of feelings. Thank you for your last message, in the video, thank you for people like you, and the inspiration for doing these dream jobs. that at the same time encourage don't take anything for granted, and pay attention to the little miracles that happens every second around all of us.
Hi Nachi, thank you for taking time out of your day to watch the video and share your sentiments. Means a lot.
You have such a wonderful job! Talk about having the time of your life! We all can learn a thing or two from your free spirit and connection with the world around you.. You are quickly becoming my most favorite RUclipsr! Thank you for sharing this with us!
29 minutes of Summer, Dr Piyakaset and plants. Yaas!
I was a novice mountaineer in the Philippines back in the day and ooooh how I wish I was also into plants that time. Watching this made me question if I missed out on seeing houseplants (that I have now) on how the grew in the wild. Great vid again as usual. ❤
Also condolences to you and the family and friends of your botanist friend. 😢
I was first moved to tears when Dr. Piyakaset pointed out the little blue flowers growing on and around the granite where the water drains. When he spoke about how climate change had reduced the number and they would eventually disappear I was overwhelmed. Then when you announced the loss of your collegue an ended the video with such a lovely reminder of the transience of life I again found myself swept up in poignant emotion. Thank-you Summer for such a lovely video. It was a fitting tribute to a man who lived his life growing beautiful things. I just love what you do.
Amelia, there was so much meaning and metaphor wrapped into this film. Thank you for taking the time to watch it and share how you felt about it. I do hope it makes an impact on people's lives and gets us to realize the transience of all of our existence here on this fragile earth.
@@summerrayneoakes Thank-you for taking the time to respond in such a heartfelt way. I told my husband if he were to watch just one video from my "Plant People" this is the one. Thank-you again and you're welcome.
I am a Thai person and after I finish watching your video then I cry. This is so emotional for me. This video contained memorable experience and the rare plants that I am not even know that they exist in our country. I love your show and plants. Thank you for sharing this one of a kind video.
I was going to tell you how I completely loved this video and how insanely jealous I am but the last bit was really sad. and put a different perspective on things. Thank you for sharing and deepest condolences.
Thank you for watching and sharing your thoughts.
A sobering reminder that we need to follow our hearts and passion. You show us that in allowing us to follow along on your journey exploring these amazing places. So sorry for your loss
The ending really hit me...a true life lesson.
I want a botanist friend to show me the beautiful world of plants. Thank you so much for taking us along, Summer!
Jaw dropping beauty. Truly Awesome. I’m so sorry about your friend, but thank you for sharing Chenin with us 🍃
A sudden and tragic loss always serves as a jarring reminder to do and pursue what you love. Now Miss SRO, we need to have a discussion on proper footwear for exploring temperate and subtropical forests at high elevations!🤔 I was worried the entire adventure about your ankles!😬 Hooray for the carnivorous plant sighting! I love Drosera and it's always a treat to see them in the wild.
Thanks for watching Peter. As far as footwear-I hadn't planned to go at high elevations when in Thailand. But the Ons hikers seemed to be reliable.
@@summerrayneoakes they should definitely send you a few pairs for the extremely rigorous field testing! 😉👍
Prayers for his family and friends... he lived his life in a beautifully place and now goes to even more beautiful habitat to search and discover and be happy forever. RIP🐞
I am coloring my artwork while watching this video and I am all goosebumps reading the description. It is sad yet is is also fulfilling to know he made use of his time on earth to the fullest. Honestly, I got to know the Latin names of our house gardens while me and my nanay (mom) watching your videos, Miss Summer. God bless always!
Thank you for all of your amazing work and for sharing it with us. Transporting me from one magical kingdom to another. Never did I think I would end up crying at the end of anyone of your videos, but here I am. Sometimes you think life. Sometimes life thinks you.
Thank you for always bringing us great videos and the people you visit that share their plant knowledge and passion with the world. Prayers for his family and friends.
You're welcome Jenny. Thank you as well for watching it until the end...
I have been waiting for this episode for a year. Chanin was one of th nicest persons I have ever known. Thank you Summer.
Thank you for watching and keeping Chanin in your heart
This is how I feel taking a friend through a botanic garden or plant shop naming all of the plants in sight 😂
RIP botanist Chanin 💚
As an ecologist and a botanist, this is wonderful to watch. It's amazing that good videos can be made on this kind of topics and have such a larga audience. Congratulations!
This video moved me so much. Its my dream to become a botanist. I adore people like him who have explored a lot about plants. He will definitely be remembered.
This episode filled my heart with joy and great sadness at the same time. I wanted to become a gardener but my health prevented that from happening I did work with plants for 5 years and I am grateful that I still can enjoy this hobby. To see likeminded people show their passion for plants and life in general, fills my spirit with joy. This episode ended with one of life's sad moments, also a reminder of how brief life can be. My condolence to Touts family and friends, R.I.P Tourt.
Dr. Piyakaset is damn right. This is the new, true, National Geographic channel!!
RIP Mr Thorut, thank you for sharing your passion with the world.
Typing this through a few tears. A beautiful video Summer; in many many ways. It deserves to be naminated. In my opinion, it deserves to win for what that's worth. On all your videos, you have my gratitude, on this one, you have my respect.
Amazing opportunity to see so many interesting species on their native habitats (that Eria and ferns on that mossy fallen branch were just outstanding), but such an heartbreaking end. Having read a bit about Chanin Thorut, he really seemed to be passionate about plants and my thoughts go to those closer to him.
Summer, This has to be one of the best videos, i have ever seen. So beautiful,, and so emotional. So heart warming.. yet so heartbreaking. Thank you for sharing this beautiful episode with us all.
This is such a great video to watch, even for people that are not plant aficionados, just to see your passion for plants, Summer you really have a way for handling beetles....and thank you for sharing such a personal experience. Sorry for the loss.
Thanks for watching and sharing your sentiments Klaus. And yes, the insects would probably beg to differ! haha :)
I'm in love with this channel...m getting obsessed day by day....can't resist myself from watching your videos... Your expidations are just amazing.. 😍😍😍
Oh my .......initially I was going to comment on how this is one of the most exciting, interesting and informative video on plants I have ever watched!!!!......what adventures you have all the time! .......then you break that sad news to us......thanks for respecting and honouring the great Botanist Chanin. My appreciation for the wonders of nature is greatly heightened thanks to you.
This was such a beautiful 29minutes to watch, was saddened to know a great botanist passed away, these shocking departures always reminds us of how fragile we humans are and to value the time we have in our beautiful planet!
Its really fascinating that there is an Plantchanel that makes Videos that could be made by BBC. Crazy good quality. I wonder who is founding this... anyway. I love it :D
Yes
I like to create films to give plants and nature a voice. So when people watch it, they can see plants and our environment like they've never seen them before.
Summer Rayne Oakes And this you do really well. Even with this Hard topics like at the and of this Video. Thank you very much
@@summerrayneoakes You Tube needs an award show...The award for best Plant related Documentary goes to Summer Rayne Oaks for RPS Thiland's Tiger's Nose. Seriously exquisite and some of your best work. Again our deepest condolences for your loss.
Absolutely gorgeous, Summer. The environment and all these rare plants look amazing. Thanks for sharing.
I ' m so sorry for the loss of your friend.
Summer, can I just say I admire your passion for plants and the green lung of the world. We gathered today in our house and watched your channel as entertainment. It’s fascinating for us to peak through many countries and their specialties. Thank you for doing what you’ve been doing
This video is incredible. To be able to virtually go with you on this field trip and see rare plants is a rare treat. The beauty of walking among the clouds, the vivid blue of a rare flower that's found in only two places in the world was amazing to see. A heartfelt thank you to Dr. Piyakaset for so willingly sharing his passion for plants.
This video was such a joy to watch and then to end with such sorrow on the passing of a colleague. My deepest condolences to Chanin Thorut's family, friends, and colleagues.
Hi Barbara, thank you as always for watching the film; and sharing your sentiments. It was indeed a harrowing and uplifting trip all wrapped into one.
Last night, a few hours after I watched this video. One of my two dogs, both old men, suffered a paracardial effusion out of no where, and had to be put down. Life is incredibly fragile for something so precious.
I'm so sorry for your loss of your pet friend as well. Never, never easy. As they are part of our family sometimes as much as our very own human kind.
Your video took me on a beautiful journey deep into the green and up into the clouds . I'm in tears but , I feel the one who passed on was a good spirit and you were brought there to capture him in his most happy environment just before the Universe called him back . Thank you 🤗🤗
Thank you for taking time out of your day to watch such a film and share your sentiments.
Summer! This video is absolutely amazing! I aspire to be just like you. You are a super special person in this world. Thank you for sharing this and all your other adventures! -Michael
This video made its way to my feed today. As I watched I was mesmerized by the beauty. Been able to see plants only native to that mountain was incredible. It is always entertaining seeing you and your love for not only plants but also animals. I truly hope to become a Botanist one day soon. Indoor plants are great to have but I do believe that there's a bigger purpose for them in our world and lives.
The ending was shocking to say the least. By the end I felt their pain. My condolences to the family and everyone that knew, cared & loved him. Thanks for sharing. I think it touched us all 💚
The view and the plants in their natural habitat are stunning! Thank you for sharing this video.
This is my favorite video of yours. It was very generous of Dr. Piyakaset to allow you to join in the little expedition so in turn we also get to see plants in their natural habitat. I felt like when I was younger and was always excited to discover new plants and animals in what used to be my less crowded and less progressive hometown. Now that most of lands were turned into homes and subdivision, those times when I'm exploring are the best memories I have. At the end, it was sad to know that a man who had a passion for plants, Mr. Thorut, had passed away. May his memory and passion for plants live forever.
I feel the same....You will get to enjoy Chanin's passion in the coming episodes...I know his work has influenced many; and I hope those he has inspired carry on his passion..
Thank you for constantly teaching me about plants and, most of all, about life ... I'm crying with your words and sending light to you, family and friends of Chanin.
Summer, thanks so much for sharing this video in its entirety. Very emotional, and like you said in the video, we never know how much time we have. Thank you. ❤
You're welcome....
Such a contrast between the euphoria of discovery & the shock of the ending. Condolences to his family & colleagues
I felt like I watched a movie, so touching. Hope Dr. Chanin RIP. His love for plants will be carried on.
Far from the hustle & bustle crowd.
A beautiful educational film well made.
My heart goes with the departure of Mr Thorut Chanin. Must be a great man indeed.
Out of many short films you have shared Summer, this one is my favorite. How beautiful nature is! RIP to your friend and follow botanist, may his family find love, sunshine and peace.
I loved all those little flowers and the beautiful insects. And the view from the mountain top is breathtaking! I'm sorry about your friend botanist. My condolences. May his soul rest in peace.
Awesome video! I love seeing co-botanists doing such great documentary. 🤗
Omg that ending tho 😭😭 thank you for this video!! It was so fun getting to explore the forest with you and the botanist! Felt like I was there!!
You spoke beautifully truthful words Summer! This video was a testament to the dedication of a life richly lived for this gentleman botanist, I am sure. Earthly splendour nothing to compare to his heavenly home...God be strength for all those whose lives he abundantly blessed with his knowledge and passion for natures discoveries! 🙏
Amazing film.... thank you summer for everything that u have done for the community of plant lover all around the world...
Thank you for this beautiful episode... and may Chanin Thorut's soul REST IN PEACE...
This episode was absolutely beautiful. It was like walking in the heaven.❤️
It's really great to have these wonderful species shown in their natural habitat. If you'd hike up most mountains without a botanist, you'd miss these tiny miracles. Shame it had to end on such a somber note.
I'm new to your channel Summer and I only watched this video now. Wow, this video is a great tribute to your late friend. Even though the end was shocking, I thought the expedition was incredible! As someone who is a herpetology enthusiast and a plant lover, I think that being out in the field and observing the plants and animals in their natural habitat is the best feeling ever! Thank you for a fantastic video!. ❤
That was so so sad, a genius like Mr Chanin to have left the world so soon . Through your channel I came to knowabout him ,his dedication and contribution to plant world .
Thank you Summer for bringing this journey to us. RIP Chanin Thorut
Bless you. Thanks for your videos. They are inspiring and awestrucking. Because of u i have developed new found love for plants and trees and i am amazed by how beautiful the living organisms around us are. Grateful because of you. Thanks for being you.
I’m so sorry for your loss Summer remember he will always and forever travel with you where ever you go such a touching video thank you 💔
Ms. Oakes, I can't begin to tell you how much I am enjoying your You-Tube posts, and this one was certainly the clincher. Thank you for highlighting the wonder of SE Asia and particularly the posts about Singapore, the Garden City, where we live. Please keep doing what you're doing: I find you genuine and even the whole "Tippy the Chicken" thing strikes me as endearingly honest.
Hi Christopher, thank you so much for sharing your sentiments. This is a Labor of Love, so it means a lot. And Kippee says 'hello'!
BEAUTIFUL, that purple striped flower is incredible and so many amazing beautiful plants. I am so sorry to hear about the loss of Chanin, best wishes to his family and everyone supporting him.
So many interesting plants! I have learned so much. Thank you for sharing your trip!
This is by far the best video you and your team has produced. The dr said “like national geographic” but I beg to differ, it’s better. Lots of love to you, your team and chanin’s family. May he rest in peace.
I appreciate that compliment.
The ending was so emotional. I'm literally crying :'( My deepest condolence to the families. I'm really enjoying the whole trip to the Thailand's forest. So many new knowledge I've learned. Thank you, Summer.
Thank you for taking time to watch and share your sentiments
This was beautiful and heartfelt. Thank you for sharing your passion and taking us with you.
So cool to see a tribing begonia in the wild
My heart literally dropped at the end of the vid. May he rest in peace.
This is one of the coolest videos I have ever seen. I wish I could see it over and over again as if I haven't seen it before. You're doing a great job, Summer. I love your work and I love you so much. Please never stop doing what you're doing. I hope this video and Green Your Space win the awards. Because girl you deserve this and so much more. ❤️❤️❤️
Such a beautiful film, I am in ore of both you knowledge and passion for plants. So sorry for the loss .
Thankfully I found this content and a person who really showed me how she loves the nature. Thank you Summer!! for such a great and informative trip, love it. However, the ending is literally sad.
Love everything, thanks for this amazing film. I will wait to see ep138 in memory of Mr.Chanin.
It will be in some of his full glory.
I’m so sorry for everyone’s loss. I hope you’re all okay and remember to take care of yourselves.
Thank you though so much for this amazingly brilliant experience of seeing the plants in their natural habitat. Thank you for all those lovely close ups and focusing on the detail as well from the camera crew. Amazing that it picked up all the fog so well too. It was incredible truely like entering another world. We wish you all the best 💜 much love 💜
Hi Lance, thanks for taking the time to watch. I'll send my regards to Sander, who was our camera 'crew' that day. It was a lot of ups and downs that day, but he did a good job maintaining composure ....
Summer, 😲 wow, outstanding. And the detail, the sharing of the Doctor's know ledge. Wonderful! Maria Montreal Canada
So many great lessons all around, Summer:) I was literally dizzy seeing those spectacular views. On a random note: I think you scrambled that poor iridescent bug's brain trying to get him to fly-ha! He got his revenge, though;)
One of the best and heart felt videos. I always tell my boys live your best life and love hard, be kind because life is not forever. The Mountain View’s was just breath taking, I can’t wait to go back. Thank you Summer for a great video.🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🦋
Thank you for watching, writing, and sharing your sentiments...
That was both wonderful and sad. Thank you for both. Sorry for your loss.
I really enjoyed all of your videos taken in Thailand.. I hope you continue to amaze us all the time... May God protect you in all of your travels! 🙏
You can really feel the passion for what you two love and I'm so happy that you are here to share it with us ! So sorry for your lost! Thanks for this very special episode.
Thank you for watching and sharing Sally.
It was such a beautiful video I was very much so crying at the end thank you for sharing all of this with us!
Thank you so much for watching the entire episode. Means a lot.
Very interesting and informative video. I absolutely love all the tiny pretty flowers. The ending however was sad. I will pray for his family during this difficult time. RIP.
This is such a good video. Love meeting such knowledgeable and neat people through your videos
That ending is so rough. I hope Chanin's family and friends recover well and remember him fondly
Thank you for your sentiments. I hope we've captured Chanin in his elements in some of the forthcoming videos so people can appreciate his knowledge and contributions.
What an incredible experience to explore such a special mountain top! I am so envious of that adventure! Thank you for sharing Summer!
This event is absolutely stunning. The plants and rocks are absolutely beautiful, wow look at the views.
Oh my goodness, you are very brave indeed. I am terrified of heights 😅 Thank you guys for taking me up that mountain from the safety of my bed! Also, I am so sorry for your loss. May his soul rest in peace.
This is amazing Summer...THANK YOU SO MUCH for taking us with you to this amazing country. I’d love to be a fly on your shoulder to see this myself. OMG so beautiful...so stunning!!!
